Block Inc. (NYSE: SQ) announced the release of Proto Rig, a modular bitcoin mining system, and Proto Fleet, open-source fleet management software. The announcement was made at Core Scientific's facility in Dalton, Georgia, where Proto Rigs are currently operating.
Proto Rig features a modular design that allows operators to upgrade individual hashboards without replacing entire units. The company states this approach transforms mining hardware from a 3-5 year disposable asset into a 10-year infrastructure investment, reducing costs by 15-20% each upgrade cycle. The system offers tool-free repair capabilities and delivers 1.5 times the power per foot of rack space compared to traditional mining hardware, according to the press release.
"Mining hardware hasn't really changed in years," said Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block. "Machines break often, are hard to repair, expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and don't make the most efficient use of power or space. With Rig, we set out to change all of that–and contribute to hardware decentralization in the process."
Proto Fleet combines power-scaling, monitoring, diagnostics, and maintenance tools in a single platform. The software will be available at no cost to mining operators of all sizes. Templeton noted that mining software has not kept pace with broader software advances, creating an opportunity to improve operational efficiency.
These releases represent the first two end-to-end products from Proto, Block's bitcoin mining division, following its initial chip sale to Core Scientific. Proto Global, LLC operates as an affiliate of Block Inc., which also owns Square, Cash App, Bitkey, and other financial technology brands.
The products are designed to be compatible with both modern and legacy mining infrastructure, allowing operators to maximize efficiency in existing facilities without extensive retrofitting.
