Alibaba launches new AI model to power robots

Investing.com -- Alibaba unveiled a new artificial intelligence model called RynnBrain on Tuesday, designed specifically to power robots and help them understand their physical surroundings.

The model enables robots to comprehend the physical world and identify objects. In a demonstration video released by Alibaba's DAMO Academy, a robot successfully identifies fruit and places it in a basket - a seemingly simple task that requires complex AI to govern object recognition and movement.

This development puts Alibaba in competition with other tech giants developing similar technologies. Nvidia offers several models for training and operating AI in robotics under its "Cosmos" brand, while Google DeepMind has created Gemini Robotics-ER 1.5 for similar purposes.

The robotics field falls under "physical AI," which includes AI-powered machines like self-driving cars - a sector China has prioritized in its technological competition with the United States.

For Alibaba, RynnBrain represents an entry point into the robotics market and builds on momentum from its Qwen family of AI models, which are among the most advanced AI systems developed in China.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is also active in this space, developing AI for the company's Optimus robot. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed strong optimism about the sector, describing AI and robotics as "a multitrillion-dollar growth opportunity."
