Amazon Web Services (NASDAQ: AMZN) and SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) announced plans to make SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which is set to launch by the end of 2025.
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud represents a €7.8 billion investment from Amazon and will launch its first region in Brandenburg, Germany. The cloud infrastructure will operate independently from existing AWS regions with no critical dependencies on non-EU infrastructure.
SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities will initially include SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP on the new European infrastructure. These security-hardened solutions are designed for regulated industries and government organizations requiring data residency, operational autonomy, and resiliency requirements.
SAP Sovereign Cloud is already available on AWS in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India. The companies have maintained a partnership for more than 16 years.
"We're delighted that SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities will be available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud," said David Brown, vice president of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS. "This will give organizations more choice in how they meet their sovereignty requirements while leveraging best-in-class cloud technologies."
Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, stated that the expanded offerings enable customers to "harness the full power of cloud innovation and AI" while maintaining compliance with local regulations.
The collaboration targets public sector organizations and companies in highly regulated industries across Europe, providing them with cloud solutions that meet specific digital sovereignty requirements while supporting AI innovation initiatives.
