KeyBanc analyst Eric Gonzalez reiterated an Overweight rating and $84.00 price target on Papa John's (NASDAQ: PZZA).
The analyst commented, "Earlier today, Papa Johns announced President and Chief Executive Officer Rob Lynch will be leaving the Company to assume the role of CEO at Shake Shack. Concurrently, Papa Johns announced that the Board of Directors has appointed Ravi Thanawala, the Company’s current Chief Financial Officer, as Interim CEO effective immediately. The Company also reiterated its FY24 adjusted operating income and development outlook as it remains on track to deliver $153 million-$163 million in profit, a 20% increase in net unit growth in North America, and 100-140 gross international openings."
"Our Take. We view this as a modest negative for PZZA stock. Over the last several years, we had grown quite fond of Mr. Lynch. The Company faced significant challenges during his tenure, and we believe he deserves credit for rebuilding the brand following the ouster of its founder, managing through the pandemic when the brand was ill prepared to handle the surge in demand, and sustaining the vast majority of COVID-era sales gains as consumer behaviors normalized. In addition, Mr. Lynch successfully transitioned Papa Johns away from deep discounts—instead focusing on menu innovation, ingredient quality, operational execution, and convenience, including the adoption of third-party delivery services at a time when its competitors were nervous to utilize that channel. Although the Company continues to face challenges, particularly in international markets, we remain confident in its “Back to Better 2.0” plan. These changes take effect next month, and we continue to believe that menu innovation, new brand messaging, and stepped-up national advertising will drive an uptick in SSS growth in the quarters ahead while development incentives will jumpstart domestic unit growth that offsets international headwinds."
