KeyBanc Reiterates Overweight Rating on Ecovyst Inc. (ECVT) Amid Strategic Review

KeyBanc analyst Aleksey Yefremov reiterated an Overweight rating and $10.00 price target on Ecovyst Inc. (NYSE: ECVT).

The analyst said: "On December 2, Ecovyst (NYSE: ECVT) announced the strategic review of its Advanced Materials & Catalysts (AM&C) business. The key focus of the review is to increase shareholder value given ECVT's view that AM&C is undervalued due to the lumpiness of orders/sales. Management does not believe the business is structurally different, rather it's looking to improve the valuation dislocation it currently sees. All possible options are being assessed, including a possible JV, a sale, or growth initiatives. In our view, the key challenge in the business is in the Zeolyst International (ZI) joint venture (JV) with Shell (50/50) given the variability of hydrocracking catalyst sales and near-term headwinds around sustainable fuels demand (biodiesel, SAF). As a reminder, ECVT saw a rapid deterioration in sustainable fuels demand during 2Q (see note here) owing to lower RIN prices and a slowdown in operating rates/capacity additions. Management does not foresee Shell impeding the outcome of the strategic review, and did not rule out the possible sale of its 50% stake to Shell. The review is expected to be complete by mid-2025 and ECVT highlighted it may not result in a transaction.

Overall, we view the decision as a positive given management is being proactive in taking steps to improve shareholder value, as well as better allocate capital. Although uncommitted, we sense management will look to allocate any potential proceeds toward further debt reduction and bolt-on deals vs. share repurchases."
