In a report on Thursday, the research firm iSuppli Corp. pointed out that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) recent flurry of new product has overshadowed one of its most significant announcements earlier this month for a potential "Top 10" consumer electronics product.
Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs showed off AirPlay at a special event on September 1. The system streams audio, either wirelessly or over Ethernet to third party docks. Jobs said that AirPlay spans the entire audio industry.
"AirPlay represents another effort by Apple to stake a leadership position in the burgeoning connected home market," said Jordan Selburn, principal analyst, consumer electronics, for iSuppli. "The technology leverages Apple's dominant position in the MP3/PMP player market. With AirPlay, the iPad, iPod and iPhone can be the servers for a home filled with music—and music distribution via iTunes."
The firm noted that the seamless connectivity of AirPlay is a sticking point, given that the technology of home audio networks have not reached the level needed to meet the insatiable consumer appetite for audio content.
"Addressing the seamless connection of audio is the area where AirPlay has the potential to be a truly disruptive force in the market, potentially turning it into a Top 10 consumer electronics segment with unit volumes perhaps even comparable to televisions," Selburn said.
The firm sees Apple on the verge of creating an iPod type explosion with wireless home audio networking. When Apple creates a simple way to enjoy music throughout the home AirPlay will take off according to iSuppli.
Shares of Apple are down 1.14 percent to $284.05 in midday market movement on Thursday.
