Venture Global to build power plants for AI data centers
Investing.com -- Venture Global has entered into agreements with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes Energy Services to build gas-fired power plants at its facilities to supply electricity to data centers.
The natural-gas exporter said the deals will allow it to make up to 10 gigawatts of computing capacity available over time at sites the company owns or controls. The new power plants will not be connected to the electrical grid.
Venture Global expects to order equipment by the end of the year for the first phase of on-site power generation for data centers. The company said it could have power generation available starting around late 2028 or early 2029.
"We think we'll be able to build our AI utility to one of the larger ones in the U.S. in the next few years," said Michael Sabel, Venture Global's chief executive. "It's very copy-paste for what we've already been doing for years."
The company already operates its own off-grid power plants. Venture Global builds and operates its own power infrastructure to run its natural-gas export facilities and is one of the top exporters of liquefied natural gas. It operates two shipping terminals on Louisiana's Gulf Coast and is developing additional facilities.
Venture Global said it has around 4.5 gigawatts of power generation operating, under construction, or for which equipment has been ordered.
Developers of about one-third of all data-center capacity in the works are planning to build power on site, according to data provider Cleanview.
